The region’s biggest soccer tournament takes place between 14 national
teams from the member countries of the Council of Southern Africa Football
Associations (COSAFA), namely Angola, Botswana, the Comores, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi,
Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia,
Zimbabwe and Associate Member Reunion.
The tournament
was first played in 1997 as a regional championship. Zimbabwe, Zambia, South
Africa and Angola are the only countries to have won the Cup, with Zimbabwe
heading the list with four titles.
Castle Lager, a
brand synonymous with football in Africa, returns as the main sponsor of the
tournament. South African Breweries appointed experiential marketing agency EXP to
amplify their sponsorship of the Cup. Beginning in April, the Events and Activations team at EXP has been working
on a brand strategy to leverage Castle Lager’s title sponsorship of the COSAFA
Cup, including country-specific launch events, consumer promotions and
incentive tours.
